Week 7 - Shapes, sorting, numbers, counting, showing a number

Activities:
*Rub a number - students rub a number in the middle of their paper, then draw four lines to make boxes, then draw 4 way to show the number. (dots, tally, fingers, objects, number word)  I think this year I am only going to have them show me one or two ways to make the number - it is hard for me to even come up with 4!

I placed the word NEW by tubs that I will introduce on that day.  Instead of trying to show the students several new tubs in one day, I have found just changing out one a day makes the introduction to what we are doing today much shorter and the students remember one new one better than several new ones.

School Year 2014-2015 Week 1-3

Welcome Back!  So sorry for the late post, but everyone knows how crazy a start to Kindergarten is AND trying to get your scedule to work.

Week 1
We started the school year with just exploration,  Tubs are set out and the students simply explore what is there.  It give them a chance to get their "play" out.  Everyone wants to run their fingers through the buttons, but if you start right with a job for them to do, it is hard to focus with their desire to just play getting in the way.  SO you fix that with "explore" time.

Here are a list of some of my math tubs:
Links
Unifix cubes
Boats (from Oriental)
Keys
Pattern Blocks
Cubes
Tiles
Seashells
Squares
Shapes
Lids
Snap Cubes
Fish
Dinosaurs
Bread ties
Pentograms
Tangrams
Buttons
Jewels
Leaves (plastic from Michaels)

I usually move the tubs the first week, but due to our schedule, I needed for the students to move.  Here is why.  I have Math at the end of my day.  We have first lunch this year so I need to fit in packing up AND snack into my schedule without loosing instructional time, so I have one table for snack and one table for packing up.  I have continued with this for two weeks, and now that I have the students trained to pack up and I have taken that out of our rotation.

Week 2
Still exploring all five days.  Six tables with activities, remember two of those table are occupied with snack and packing up.  To make the packing up table independent, I used this packing up chart and the students checked off as they completed each item.  It made it so I could float and not stay just with packers.

Week 3
Monday:
Introduced 4 new jobs, still have packing and snack as the other 2 jobs.
*Fishy Count on Computers - Great for counting, recognizing numbers and mouse practice.
*Geoboard numbers - just making numbers on the Geoboards using picture cards to help.
*Pete the Cat and his groovy buttons - Draw a card and place the correct buttons on Pete
*Shape Book - my assistant is guiding this table with glue and scissors - Today is a Square House

Tuesday:
Moved packing up to before specials, opening up an additonal math tub
    *Fishy count
    *Geoboard numbers
    *Pete the Cat
*Shape Book - Color and glue macaroni on triangle
*Dot to Number - Tap not splat, students roll two die, one has a color dot and the other has a number on it - students tap using bingo markers on a blank sheet of paper.  Roll again, continue until the bell rings.

Wednesday:
Early Dismissal day so I had Math first thing in the morning  - so all 6 tubs were up and running
    *Fishy Count
    *Geoboard numbers
    *Dot to Number
    *Count and Write on iTouches
*Dot to Dot Cards - students simply write the number and connet the numbers making a picture
    *Shape Book - Triangle carrots

Thursday:
    *Fishy Count
    *Geoboards
    *Dot to number Bingo dots
*Shape Book - Color and glue Q-tips on rectangle
*Snack with Count and Write on iTouches if they finish early
    *Dot to Dot Cards

Week 6: Sets, counting and subitizing

Printing numbers are always needed at this time of the year.  Proper formation is easy to teach on the smart board with this lesson.

The smart table is helping this year with the wait time at the smart board.  One child is doing the activity  on the board and the the other three are using the SMART table.  Each day I change it to a different counting activity.  I think when I rotate the table, I  will continue to put another activity at the SMART board to avoid the misbehaviors that come with waiting.
Here is the link to the Subitizing game that is down below - it is a favorite this week and I think I will place a link on my wiki page so the parents can have a copy if they would like.  The students cover the board, quickly lift the piece off for their friend to say how many dots were there, and if they are correct, they keep the square!  The one with MORE wins.  (another quick skill being taught!)
And here is another quick game I found on Heidi song blog.  I usually start this with only number 0-5.  I have the students place those numbers in order and then match the set to the number.  I will add additional numbers as the students are ready.

I made this little game.  The students simply place the correct number of dots in the ten frame.  Very much like what they are doing above and on the SMART board last week.  Here is the linkCombined sheets are here.
Now I found this game and I love it - so great and quick AND it uses a number line that I am not always very good about introducing this early. Here is the link.
Love this activity - easy, takes very little prep work and it covers several of our Common Core Skills.  I just cut a square out of poster board, used our die cuts and glued on the numbers 1 - 10.  Do not laminate because it makes the rubbing harder.   Remove the paper from the crayons and show the students how to rub using the side of the crayon ( a very hard thing for some to get!)  After they rub, I have them draw a line above, below, to the left and to the right (positional words!)  Then they show that number in 4 different ways.  (dice, tally, ten frame, fingers, objects, word, number line, etc.)
And here is a finished one.

Puzzels and Big Numbers

This week my focus is bigger numbers, the children are still using my little homemade numbers that we used last week to put number in order from 9 - 25. The children have a stack of the cards face down in front of them, they draw a card and show me that number with the square tiles. I try to encourage the children to LINE up their items so counting is easier for me! (and them) Here is a cute game that I found, they fill a jar and later there is a recording sheet that goes along with this that uses the ten frame.

These are just foam pieces cut for filling in with pattern blocks. I have about 6 different shapes for the students to fill in. Ten frame game, it has a add section and the children add the number together on a ten frame. great game!

The apple iTouch is a great tool, the children do a variety of math games, from addition, to math vocabulary, to tangrams. They love them.

January Snow and focus on teen numbers

SO sorry for the delay on the Math Tub blog, I have had pictures ready, but forget to take them home! For the past two weeks, I have been trying to test, so one station has been a testing station. Sometimes, I put out something for the group to do while I call over one at a time, some test I can do with the math group.

I will start with this cool thing I found on TPT. Alot from this month comes from there. This is a memory game. This download comes with one set of cards and several different games to play with the same cards. I love that!
Same download, but this time it is a matching set game.

Same download, this time it is Go fish.

Same download, this time it is a more or less game, just perfect for our third quarter coming up.

This is a game called Tweet, Tweet, it is like the BUMP game we played last month. I may save this for the spring, but I love the set cards, the children instead of rolling a dice, they draw a card, it may be a number or a set and place their cube on the number. If it is a number with a friends cube on it, they can BUMP them off, if you put two of the same color on the same number, you LOCK yourself there and no one can bump you off - it is a game my students could play alllllll day!

Teen Tic Tac Toe, the children spin and then mark the number they get on their tic tac toe board. First with three in a row wins!

Teen game - similar to war game, at the end they count out their cards - whoever has the most wins.

Teens with buttons, pick a card, place the correct number buttons on the card, show the number with the flip cards.

Save the Snowman is like the BUMP game, they roll, and place a snap cube on the number, they get to bump friends off, and lock themselves on.

Connect three - children roll, write the number, try to get three numbers in a row. There is also one for two dice we will do later.

Teen number with pattern blocks.

Teen numbers with snap cubes.

Love this - matching sets to number and numbers to sets.

Pentomines - spatial relations.

Finish the pattern with unifix cubes.

Roll a snowman.

TESTING! Just one I can do with the four in my math group, all the other test, I pulled one on one.

Enjoy! And I found this link you may love! Penguins
