Beginning of March math tubs

Making teens and writing it on the SMART Board

We are working on using different ways to sort than just color, size, shape. I am looking to increase their vocabulary, so we are using texture, height, and weight. I introduced this yesterday during Morning Meeting, and then today they put it work!

Ordering numbers 9 - 20.

Showing numbers in both hands on and writen form.

Find one more game. So sorry, I can't find this exact one anymore, but their are alot of these out there on TPT. The children roll the die, and add one more to the number and cover THAT number. First time playing today, and several friends were only covering the numbers they rolled and wondered why there was a 7 on the board? Too funny. Another day with this and we will good to go!

Dr. Suess brought us this great game, and it only takes running two and you have a game for Math Tubs.

And that will do us for this week and next. Enjoy!

Ending Feb and beginning March: math tubs

I can't believe the month is gone! I REALLY thought I had kept up with this blog better than I did this month. SO sorry. Last week we really focused on recording patterns, I just realized last week that we had made patterns in a lot of different ways, but I had not allowed my students to record them. Surprisingly, it went very well. But here are a couple SMART board lessons.

And another one:

More or Less game - I like this one because they play it like war, but when they turn over the number they have to show the number on the board, then they roll to see who takes the card. It goes a little slower than war, but I like the 1 to 1 correspondence.

Another BUMP game, it comes with frogs to put on the numbers, but I am still using unifix cubes and the kids love it. I will soon introduce the concept of addition and show them that they have been doing it all year! ( and the link also give you a cute roll a frog game too!)
Shifty shapes, we have been naming shapes at calendar and it was brought up one morning that a trapezoid looks like half of a hexagon -so exciting! So I pulled out this activity so they can see all the different ways to make a hexagon - problem today is they only wanted to make one with ONE color and not mix it up. I guess tomorrow I will have to model a little more. :)

Tic Tac toe - just took an old game and added a one to all of the numbers so we can practice writing and saying our teen numbers - this years groups will KNOW their teens.

Bears on stairs - children make the stairs and then walk their bear up to see if it is correct. Easy, no prep work and the kids love it!

So as I look ahead, I will need to start a few assessments next week, just to knock them out. Lots of the skills this quarter they children KNOW, so it should go easily. I need to focus on attributes a little more, we are doing this in morning meeting, but I am having a difficult time working as a teacher at a table in Math tubs because of my challenging class this year.

Math Tubs, Valentines week

Simple week, really hitting teen numbers and I can really tell that the children have had ALOT of practice, they are getting better and they are UNDERSTANDING how to make a teen number. I love it! Here are some simple activities:

A quick and simple game I made for the SMART board. Very independent and GREAT - I could really see who understood. (It is also in our Dropbox)

A Valentine roll the die game. The children are drawing a little heart bug, they loved it and I am focusing on KNOWING those numbers without counting the dots. A lot of the children are there!

Here is the Polar Bear Die game that was the first thing you saw, this is just a picture of the kids playing it.

War! Concept is More or Less and the children LOVE playing this, they choose to play this during centers and after school waiting for the bus. Now that's a hit. :)

The Ten Frames game - we play it everyday, amazing how quick they are getting. I can really see quickly who is still struggling with one to one.

Hot Cocoa Teen game I posted this last week and we are still playing this. Here is last weeks link.

We are also rotating in manipulative to make patterns and sort. My plan this week is to introduce the more or less game with the unifix cubes, but I will have to do it whole group as an introduction, during morning meeting. I am still monitoring math tubs right now, helping with the low friends and giving those children the support at each math tub that they need.

Math tubs starting a new quarter

Sorry, last minute add on, and it is a pain to put it on the bottom of the page. :)
Counting teen numbers:

This week we needed to take step back. We have had trouble with getting along this year, so my assistant and myself are just monitoring the tubs, focusing on getting along, working with others and cleaning up when asked to. O.k. it is over half way through the year, but that is the group we were blessed with!
Here are a couple new things we added this week:

Good ol patterns:

Estimation: the children guess how many cubes they think will fit on the line, and then they try their guess. I think tomorrow I will put my flip cards there also so they will show me their guess and then fix it to the right number.

Smart board lesson, easy and self checking, I uploaded it to SMART exchange so you can get to it easily.

A cute roll a peguin I found - this one they color, just something a little different.

January Snow and focus on teen numbers

SO sorry for the delay on the Math Tub blog, I have had pictures ready, but forget to take them home! For the past two weeks, I have been trying to test, so one station has been a testing station. Sometimes, I put out something for the group to do while I call over one at a time, some test I can do with the math group.

I will start with this cool thing I found on TPT. Alot from this month comes from there. This is a memory game. This download comes with one set of cards and several different games to play with the same cards. I love that!
Same download, but this time it is a matching set game.

Same download, this time it is Go fish.

Same download, this time it is a more or less game, just perfect for our third quarter coming up.

This is a game called Tweet, Tweet, it is like the BUMP game we played last month. I may save this for the spring, but I love the set cards, the children instead of rolling a dice, they draw a card, it may be a number or a set and place their cube on the number. If it is a number with a friends cube on it, they can BUMP them off, if you put two of the same color on the same number, you LOCK yourself there and no one can bump you off - it is a game my students could play alllllll day!

Teen Tic Tac Toe, the children spin and then mark the number they get on their tic tac toe board. First with three in a row wins!

Teen game - similar to war game, at the end they count out their cards - whoever has the most wins.

Teens with buttons, pick a card, place the correct number buttons on the card, show the number with the flip cards.

Save the Snowman is like the BUMP game, they roll, and place a snap cube on the number, they get to bump friends off, and lock themselves on.

Connect three - children roll, write the number, try to get three numbers in a row. There is also one for two dice we will do later.

Teen number with pattern blocks.

Teen numbers with snap cubes.

Love this - matching sets to number and numbers to sets.

Pentomines - spatial relations.

Finish the pattern with unifix cubes.

Roll a snowman.

TESTING! Just one I can do with the four in my math group, all the other test, I pulled one on one.

Enjoy! And I found this link you may love! Penguins

December Math tubs

Happy December! My favorite math tubs of the year because I can actually tie in "crafts" that we no longer have time to do and call it Math! Enjoy!

Here the children are making ornaments for our tree and at the end of December they will take them home as gifts. They choose either a wreath, or a candy cane. Wreath is an AAAAB pattern, candy cane is an AAB. I just used the tri color beads and pipe cleaners. To remember who they belong to, I cut a little holly leaf and write their name on it, punch a hole and tie a ribbon around it.

Tic Tac Toe is a favorite, I teach it one day and then put this as in independent tub. Children who have played do great, but some still stuggle with who wins the game. :) When the time is up, the children cut their paper in half so each child has something to take home.

We are working hard on sorting, here the children are sorting buttons. They are to sort, while a friend hides their eyes and then they try to guess the rule.

We are painting our craft sticks at this tub, brown for our rudolph, white for a snowman, and green for a tree - which we do place in order from smallest to largest. :)

We started really working on those teen numbers this week. So I introduced the number 11 and 12 and the children will glue pattern block pieces to each one. These came from HeidiSongs and I also sing the number songs that go with each number.

Here is a favorite and so easy and cheap! All I did was glue magnetic pieces onto a little pom pom. The children make patterns at my back white board. What I love about this, is that I can see who is working and who is not, who can make a pattern and who can not, and I can still teach my group!

Set couting from HeidiSongs! I just ran 4 copies and places in them in page protectors. The children circle the correct answer and they know not to erase it until I check their answers. I have not started this yet, but I will after I review sets of ten in my egg cartons.

Grid Game - played each month, roll, pick a color and count the pieces and put them on the board. Next friends turn.

Pattern with cheap Christmas stamps. Most of the children can stamp without the grid stamp, but I do have a few that have a difficult time, so they use the grid stamp.

Sorting with Christmas goodies. The chilren had three jobs at this tub. First they sorted and told their friend how they sorted. Second they sorted and had their friend guess their rule. Third they sort another way and ask the entire table to guess.

A cute graphing page I place in page protectors.

Sorting by color, shape, size, and face. I love to use a venn diagram with this activity if I do it whole group.

This is just a simple roll and lay pieces on your board, but when the board is full, they roll and take that number off.

I loved the Ordinal game that I found on TPT for Thanksgiving so much, that I made one for Christmas! It is in our dropbox - so fun.

Sorting, sorting, sorting - we really need to focus on that so here are just some lids the children will sort by texture, size color, and other ways (words, no words, screw top, pop top)
Teen Go fish for those teen numbers - have to find some fun way to learn them!

Countdown Santa - I make this whole group and we point to numbers and talk about counting down and then I send this home with 24 cotton ball - we glue one down on Dec. 1.

This is a great activity because you draw shapes and the children love trying to figure out what they are drawing. We say all the shape poems and then when we finish drawing it, we black it with sharpies and then color it - a great thing for the hall!

This is a great game because it is one game that can work on sets, numbers, letters, sight words or CVC words. Once the kids play it, they want to play everyday!

You think that is enough! Enjoy!
