Subtration - finally!

I introduced subtration formally this week - the students listened to half of the book and then I told them a little story about a girl/boy loosing teeth.  We counted how many she started with, wrote that number and then we took some away and completed the problem and then counted the leftover teeth.

This is a great little addition game and you can control how easy or hard it gets - love it!

I am sure you have seen this game and I have had it in my room for years, but I forget how to play - but here is what we did.  One person is blue and one is red.  First player places his/her two pieces on two ten frames that add up to 10, so like a ten frame with 9 and a ten frame with 1, next players turn.  When I ring the bell, they look to see which one had MORE pieces on the board.

February Fun - teen numbers, addition, great counting apps

 I adapted this game from a game I found here.  The students roll the die and if they roll a three, they place three red ones on the five frame I made.  They then fill in the remaining squares with blue and write the math equation on the board - this board I found on a missing addend game I found on TPT for thanksgiving.  I tell the students if they roll the same number they have already rolled, to roll again so they have different math equations.

Here the students are picking a card ( I also found on tpt) and the students pick a snowman and place the number of buttons on the ten frame that the card ask for.  I then ask the students to show the number with the cards that I made and placed on a ring. (each set has the number 0-9 just on a small index card and laminated and a ring placed to keep one set in order)

 These nice little set cards are nice to have around.  They can just be placed in page protectors and I can check students very quickly.  I is really helping the students to apply their knowledge of ten frames and as a teacher I can see very quickly how far along many students are!

 Oh, now this is a new favorite!!!  We have a SMART table that is about 5 years old.  We have only one that we share between six classes.  So we only see it for about a month.  The students love it so much, but they are very expensive ($7,000)  BUT, I have found this little app called Counting Plus.  It is amazing.  Two students (or four) can play at the same time.  They can play just to play or they can compete against each other.  It flashes the objects quickly so subitizing is addressed and it will speed up or slow down.  AWESOME!

  This is a great packet and in it is this little go fish game that includes an "I can" card that is helpful for a free running station.  My students LOVE this game!

 This is a great little Bump game - they play it great, they are adding and do not know it, and they are working on winning nicely and loosing happily.

Xtra math - our school decided to do this, everyone said that it probably would not be for Kindergarten, but since I love technology, I thought I would at least check it out.  WOW, from what I can tell it is a free program.  You add your children, they get a four digit code that they can use at home also.  Parents can check their progress and each week, Xtra math sends me a report letting me know who has mastered which fact families.  I have added this into my math tubs.  I figure five minutes a day is great.  I feel that my kids are going to really have a jump start for first grade when it comes to learning math facts.  This really helps them move quickly.  They ONLY problem I have with this is that now, when I read a word problem, they are quick to tell me the answer instead of sketching it out! I have to remind them that they have to SHOW me, even if they know.  It's not a terrible problem. :)

Week 7: More or Less, facts of 3, counting and shapes

We are half way through the quarter and so things start moving a little faster to get everything in.  Here the children are just placing the ten frames in order from one to ten.  My higher students finished early, so I had them place them in order from 10 to one, and some even had a minute to play go fish with a friend.

I have not introduced BUMP this year, seems like we have been busy, but I just haven't worked this in. Well I did this week, and the kids loved it!  All they do is roll one or two die and cover that number.  This week is the first week I have used dotted die, I have been using the written number die for rolling and writing.  I placed the die in a little square container found at Dollar Tree.  I have a few friends that wanted to "make" the die say a number  they wanted.  This helped a little bit. (and it helped keep the die on the table)

Positional words game here, very simple but it needs to be adult led, so I had my assistant lead it when she could and a parent led it other days.

 I have several math games that are wonderful.  This is the last week I will allow the students to pick between what is available.  I have found a great little subitizing app I will have them stay on next week.

A shape game from Carson Dellosa.  Great for when a parent shows up.

More or less game.  You can read about this game here.  Simple to make, just a square of felt, tape down the middle, a wooden cube with the words more or less written on it, and two sticks of 10 unifix cubes, or snap cubes.

Illuminations Five frame has been the game this week on the computers.

Bowl Game can be found here.  This year I decided to start fact families early and with a small number.  So this week we did three and next week it will be four, so five will not be a foregin concept when the assessments are done.  This is a teacher led table and I use a white board to show the "equations".  Each time we take a turn to do this game, I ask the students to do it a different way than they did before.

I do have 8 activities this week, I only did six a day.  The bowl game I did only the last two day of the week, before I had introduced the bowl game so it could be a stand alone game.  The order of ten frames only lasted two day, and then the bump game came in its place.  Some activities get a little boring for the entire five days, so I try to switch it up a bit.  Enjoy!  Hope this was helpful!

O.K, it is that time of year, and so I don't think I will do anymore week by week blogs, not that I have been the best with that, but here are several activities that I will do over the next month. I have started with several apps, and I will come back and add names later. Most have links, but let me know if one doesn't work. Testing will be on my mind alot in the next few weeks, along with survival. :) You know what I mean! Enjoy!

This is a cute counting game here and the second on is an addition (Top it) with cards AND who has more, LOVE this game.

The block game is called Qvoid, and the second one is great for ordering numbers.

This is a great game for putting numbers in order, and the pattern one is great too.

Caboose - wonderful game on putting things in order by size and making patterns.

Math puppy is great for addition. Ten frame one is called Find Sums.

Sea Math is this app

Kid's patterns is the name of this patterning one. And then Math for Kids is this app.

Twenty Something The children move the sets of ten to make twenty and then roll and see how many ones they will need.

Making numbers in the twenties the children roll and add the ones, and then they write the number.

Another Bump game.

A fun 3D game.

Mouse Ears the children roll a number, put that number in the ear, roll again, put that number in the ear and then pull them all down in the face, and you have an addition problem!

Shape sort and here is one for the computers. Here is the one pictured. The children just sort the shapes into bowls, when they finish, they can use the 3D shapes. I love to hear the conversations going on as they discuss the shapes. :)

Butterfly addition - I use the big sheet for a few weeks before I introduce the smaller sheet. I have the children then draw dots on the butterflies before they write the answers.

Robot roll, the children are to roll the dice and then I have laminated the robot to save paper, so I just have the students trace over the shape they roll, the goal is to trace all the shapes.

Loose tooth subtraction, but I plan on using it for addition also, there is a copy of the same face with no teeth and the kids can add the teeth as they roll it. There are really great possibilities with this download.

Stacks is a game of putting numbers in order. It comes with an I can card, which helps with independence. It did cost me $2.00, but I haven't bought much for a while. :)

Domino Math - This is the same game I had in this blog, but I made it on two sheets instead of one.

One more and one less, I will search for this link, cute game that children roll and lay a cube on top. I like that it has different forms of numbers. I love to switch it up!

Shape-O is an old Mailbox game, just a bingo game with 3D shapes.

And last but not least, this is my new favorite - the kids use regular cards, (I bought a box with two sets at the Dollar Tree) and they turn over one card and then another card and write the math sentence. I love this because it is like the math game they are playing on the iTouches, but now they transfer their knowledge to real life.
